iPod Sets New Records

Apple’s popular iPod music players set two new records this week – surpassing 250 million downloads, and setting an average daily sales record of 1 million songs per day.

The iTunes Music Store, now available in more than a dozen countries, is currently selling more than 1.25 million songs per day, at an average of 99 cents each. Apple also had a great Christmas season, selling nearly 4 million units over the holiday season. Total iPod and iPod Mini sales stand at a staggering 10 million units – more than every other player combined.

In addition, sales by the iTunes Music Store (iTMS) accounted for more than 70 percent of total legal music sales from December 2003 to July 2004, according to NPD Group, an entertainment analysis firm.

The ongoing battle between Apple and RealNetworks continues to rage. After Real introduced technology to let iPod users play music downloaded from Real’s sites, Apple updated the iPod firmware to once again lock users into using the iTMS.

Real is still making attempts to open up Apple’s platform, primarily so that its 625,000 Rhapsody subscribers can make use of the most popular media player platform on the planet.

Rhapsody’s user base has more than doubled in the last year, making the property the most popular music and radio subscription service on the Internet.

Shares of Apple rose 27 cents to close at $70.76 in Monday trading on the Nasdaq Stock Market. The stock has traded in a 52-week range of $21.70 to $74.42.
