Linux set to appear on more PDAs

Linux support is growing for ARM architecture chips, which could lead to the open-source operating system appearing in a wider range of PDAs, phones and information appliances. Chip design firm ARM and embedded Linux supplier MontaVista Software last week announced that the ARM11 core family is now supported by MontaVista's Linux Consumer Electronics Edition. ARM also said that the latest version of the Linux kernel, version 2.6, contains specific optimisations to make full use of features in the ARM11 architecture.

MontaVista's Linux Consumer Electronics Edition is a version of the Linux operating system designed for phones, set-top boxes and other embedded applications. It is tailored for resource-constrained devices that require low power consumption, restricted memory sizes and short boot-up and resume times, the firm said. It also includes developer tools.

"The ARM11 microarchitecture provides an ideal hardware platform for MontaVista Linux Consumer Electronics Edition, especially for target applications in the consumer electronics, networking, and wireless market segments," said MontaVista's vice-president of engineering, Kevin Morgan.
