Proofpoint Messaging Security Gateway X-Series Provides Advanced, Machine Learning Powered Spam and Virus Protection in Easy-to-use, Low Cost Appliance

Cupertino, Calif. – June 21, 2005 – Proofpoint, Inc., the leader in large-enterprise messaging security solutions, today announced a new series of Proofpoint Messaging Security Gateway™ appliances designed specifically to meet the needs of small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). The Proofpoint Messaging Security Gateway X-Series appliance provides Proofpoint’s industry-leading anti-spam, anti-virus and email firewall capabilities at a price point and form factor ideal for enterprises with 500 or fewer mailboxes.

The X-Series appliance protects SMEs from message-borne threats at the gateway, before unwanted spam and viruses can impact a company’s mail servers and end-user inboxes, using the same technology that protects Proofpoint’s “Fortune 50” customers. The X-Series appliance is sold with a convenient bundle of message protection features including:

* Spam detection: Unrivalled protection from spam and phishing attacks is ensured by Proofpoint MLX™ machine learning technology, which analyzes more than 100,000 structural and content attributes in every message to accurately identify unwanted email.
* Virus protection: Integrated anti-virus capabilities are provided by the Proofpoint Virus Protection module. Proofpoint’s anti-virus module offers the highest level of protection against viruses, worms, trojans and other forms of malicious code through a combination of multiple virus scanning engines and the industry’s fastest update reaction times.
* Email policy enforcement: The included Proofpoint Content Compliance module makes it easy for administrators to define and enforce email acceptable use policies.
* Perimeter security: The integrated Proofpoint Email Firewall provides complete perimeter security, defending against denial-of-service, directory harvest and other forms of network-based attacks. Proofpoint’s unique MLX Dynamic Reputation™ and SMTP traffic control features constantly monitor connections at the IP address level, looking for malicious activity. Malicious connections are automatically blocked or throttled based on fully customizable mail traffic policies—keeping networks and email users safe while preserving valuable network bandwidth.
* Secure messaging support: The X-Series appliance supports digital certificates and enables gateway-to-gateway secure transfer and receipt of email using the Transport Layer Security (TLS) standard. The appliance also supports optional authentication of senders and receivers via TLS. It also integrates with third-party secure messaging solutions from vendors including Authentica, PGP Corporation, PostX Corporation, Sigaba and Voltage Security to provide enhanced, policy-driven encryption capabilities.

“As Proofpoint has quickly become one of the leading messaging security solutions for large enterprises, we’ve seen a huge demand from smaller enterprises who want the same type of anti-spam, anti-virus and policy-enforcement features in an appliance designed just for SMEs,” said Jamie Stapleton, vice president at Computer Business Solutions, a Proofpoint Gold channel partner. “Spam, viruses and other message-borne threats affect SMEs just as much as they affect large companies. With the X-Series appliance, Proofpoint is providing exactly the features that SMEs demand in a channel-friendly package that will be widely adopted by our customers.”

The first X-Series appliance model, the X200, packages all these features in a hardened, easy-to-install 1U rack-mount server that delivers performance high enough to meet the needs of any SME installation with all spam, virus and email policy features enabled.

Proofpoint’s highly-regarded ease-of-administration features have been enhanced to make setup and ongoing maintenance even easier for the small business IT departments. The X-Series features a small-enterprise optimized administration interface and “plug and play” setup wizards that enable installation in just minutes and minimize ongoing maintenance requirements. The Proofpoint MLX anti-spam engine, anti-virus engine, software and even appliance firmware are automatically kept up-to-date by the Proofpoint Dynamic Update Service™ to ensure that SMEs always have the highest levels of protection without any administrator intervention or custom tuning required.

“The Proofpoint Messaging Security Gateway X-Series appliance is the ideal entry point for SMEs that want enterprise class email protection with zero administration and extremely low total cost of ownership,” said Sandra Vaughan, senior vice president of products for Proofpoint. “Proofpoint understands that smaller enterprises need outstanding performance without maintenance hassles and the X-Series was designed as the perfect fit for these requirements.”

Pricing and Availability
The Proofpoint Messaging Security Gateway model X200 will be generally available in July 2005. Pricing for the X200 hardware is $1995. The X200 is sold with a bundle of message protection options designed specifically for SME deployments. Bundled pricing for a one year subscription to Proofpoint Spam Detection, Proofpoint Virus Protection and Proofpoint Content Compliance modules starts at $4995 annually.

For SMEs with multiple-appliance deployment requirements or that desire the advanced outbound email protection of the Proofpoint Regulatory Compliance™ and Proofpoint Digital Asset Security™ modules, Proofpoint also offers the Proofpoint Messaging Security Gateway P-Series appliances at an attractive price point for SMEs.
