HP Simplifies Business Protection for Small and Mid-size Businesses with New Smart Office Program
Publication date: Friday, 20 May 2005

PALO ALTO, Calif., May 19, 2005 As part of its Smart Office initiative for small and mid-size businesses (SMBs), HP today introduced the HP Business Protection portfolio, which helps customers keep their companies up and running by better safeguarding their business systems and IT operations.

According to a recent Forrester Research survey of 1,002 IT decision makers at North American companies of less than 1,000 employees, nearly half plan to purchase new security technologies within the next year.(1) Reflecting this concern, HP is offering an extensive lineup of solutions designed to provide a smarter, simpler and safer way for customers to protect their businesses from incidents ranging from virus threats to large-scale natural disasters.

The HP Business Protection portfolio emphasizes three areas:

* Security protection - HP supports SMBs by arming them with the tools to better protect against increasingly sophisticated security threats. Its "Layers of Security" blueprint is an approach designed to help businesses easily understand how to shield themselves from threats such as viruses, spyware, spam, intrusion and outdated security.

* Data protection -- With HP's data protection solutions, businesses are provided the tools to capture, distribute and protect information automatically and back up and recover data quickly and affordably.

* Business-critical availability -- HP provides products and services that can help keep business systems running during critical times, such as power outages, floods, mudslides, hurricanes and tornados.

"The new HP portfolio is a comprehensive approach to business protection that really addresses the business challenges that SMBs struggle with most, such as ease of management of their networking products and maintaining the integrity of their data," said Chris Liebert, senior analyst, Small & Medium Business Strategies, Yankee Group. "With a complete lineup of products, services and expert advice, HP is making it easy and affordable for small and mid-sized business customers to reduce risk so they can better focus on their businesses. While most vendors address point security concerns, HP has thought this through completely ... considering all the threats that could bring down a business and addressing data protection, IT security and availability."

Among the new services and products are the HP Smart Desktop Management Service for data protection and security of networked PCs; a pioneering online SMB Security Solution Center to make it easier for small business owners and partners to understand and choose security features to best protect their businesses; and affordable, easy-to-use storage and server solutions that help protect business data and keep it available when an SMB needs it most.

"After facing a security breach, IT threat or disaster, the survival of a smaller business often depends on how quickly it can recover," said Kevin Gilroy, senior vice president and general manager, Small and Medium Business, HP. "In today's increasingly data-centric business environment, IT preparedness is a major component to getting back to business. SMBs must confront this reality and focus their attention on this critical issue -HP's new Business Protection portfolio is simplifying that process."

The importance of data protection, integrity and availability to SMBs is evident in the statistics from a recent University of Texas study of companies that suffered from catastrophic data loss due to disaster. The study showed that 43 percent never reopened and 51 percent closed within two years.(2)

"HP enables us to feel so much more confident that our data is backed up," said Chuck Ostrowski, director of Information Technology at Weston Benshoof Rochefort Rubalcava & MacCuish, a Los Angeles-based law firm. "With earthquakes so abundant in California, we have to take every precaution to keep our data protected so our company can continue to be successful after disasters. If it costs us $20,000 per hour in lost billable attorney time every time the network goes down, imagine what it costs to lose data and files. We wouldn't choose another vendor - HP is the backbone of support to our IT infrastructure and keeps us up and running."

HP security solutions help protect SMBs from viruses, spam, spyware and intrusion

Building on the security solutions portfolio first introduced in November 2004, HP and its partners have announced two new solutions to its "Layers of Security" approach of protecting businesses from intrusion by viruses, spam, spyware and other malicious attacks.

The new HP Smart Desktop Management Service is a security service sold and delivered by HP or a qualified HP channel partner. Built from the ground up based on feedback from customers on their security needs, this comprehensive new service provides worry-free, off-site data protection, security and support of their individual client systems for an introductory price of less than $20 per month per seat,(3) with no minimum seat requirements or setup fees.

The service delivers remote data backup and restore capabilities with enhanced security features, hassle-free computer virus protection powered by Symantec for networked desktops and notebooks from HP or any other vendor, automatic Microsoft® operating system updates, and ongoing support that features an innovative remote services platform and active, real-time assistance to answer questions or support any components of this service. Additional information about the service is available at http://www.hp.com/go/clientprotection.

"The need to secure computers from spyware and complex Internet threats is becoming a top concern for smaller businesses," said Bill Buie, vice president, Global Strategic Partners at Symantec. "The new Smart Desktop Management Service from HP leverages Symantec technology and security expertise to provide the proactive protection that customers now require to properly protect themselves. Symantec is pleased to be partnering with HP to deliver this new service to customers worldwide that will help keep their companies up and running."

The HP SMB Security Solution Center is a website that provides detailed information about security features to help simplify the selection of IT security solutions when customers are configuring their new PCs, notebooks or workstations online. Expected to be available later this month, it will span several layers of security and provide customers and channel partners with an intuitive means to determine their security.

Resellers will be able leverage this content as an easy-to-use tool to assist their customers in making their security protecting selections. The HP SMB Security Solutions Center gives customers a single source to identify and purchase security solutions to best protect their business investments.

"HP's Business Protection solutions and approach is just what we in the reseller community have been looking for," said Arlin Sorensen, president, Heartland Technologies. "We, in fact, have been working to find ways amongst ourselves to deliver a predictable, affordable and scaleable solution set to meet our customers' needs, and HP's SMB Business Protection portfolio does this for us."

HP data protection helps keep customer and financial information safe

Not only must SMBs keep customer, financial and other critical information safely and securely stored, but government regulations such as Sarbanes-Oxley in the United States, the Data Protection Act in Europe and HPB 517 in Japan are increasingly making it a legal requirement. By using an HP data protection solution, SMBs are better armed to protect their information and recover lost data in the event of crisis.

The newest addition to the lineup is the HP StorageWorks Ultrium 448 Tape Drive. With pricing starting at $2,199,(3) this reliable, entry-level tape drive provides quick and easy disaster recovery through HP's exclusive One-Button Disaster Recovery feature. Designed for use with entry-level and midrange HP ProLiant servers, the Ultrium 448 tape drive is a half-height LTO Ultrium solution with 400 gigabytes of compressed (2:1) capacity per data cartridge and able to back up up to 172.8 GB/hour.

Other HP data protection offerings include backup and storage solutions such as HP OpenView Storage Mirroring Software, which performs real-time data replication between servers on a LAN to provide fail-over capabilities and avoid data loss. Also included in the portfolio are select, award-winning HP digital imaging solutions that help convert paper-based documents into digital information that can easily be accessed, stored and managed.

HP business-critical availability helps keep SMB business systems up and running

HP business-critical availability solutions are designed for customers who require 24x7 data availability or for any SMB seeking to be back online as quickly as possible after a business disruption. HP offers a family of innovative server solutions designed to protect the availability of the systems and applications businesses depend on.

The newly updated HP ProLiant DL380 Packaged Cluster enables two servers to back each other up, keeping data available without intervention even during hardware and software failure or periods of planned server maintenance. The solution is orderable in one part number, is fully redundant and comes completely contained for rapid installation. Consisting of two server nodes and shared storage prepacked in a space-efficient cabinet, this solution is priced starting at $10,449.(3)

The HP Integrated Lights-Out Advantage Pack (iLO) is an optional feature on most HP ProLiant servers to provide business-critical availability of data remotely. For as little as $349 per server,(3) iLO provides industry-leading remote management that is essential for businesses that support remote servers. It provides full remote access and management of server power, system console and system event logs regardless of the state of operation of the server.

With iLO, a server support person can install a service pack or firmware update, diagnose problems and change settings on a server in a remote office or even on the road from a handheld.(4) This remote capability reduces diagnosis and repair times and helps diminish the need for costly onsite support.
